Volunteer Event: Tsunami Debris Clean-up Project at Stinson Beach |
Help monitor, cleanup and track tsunami debris. Join special cleanups at Ocean and Stinson Beach that will be on the lookout for potential tsunami related debris that was washed away from Japan in March 2011. Confirmed tsunami debris has already been found at locations along the West Coast, including items as small as a soccer ball that belonged to a 16-year old (the ball was eventually returned) to as large as a Harley Davidson motorcycle and even large docks. Researchers expect a new influx of floating debris every spring and early summer for the next three years or so. In addition to cleaning up all trash found, you will play a crucial role in helping to identify and record data about potential tsunami debris. By comparing this data over a series of cleanups across the state, we will be able to see if there are any trends being established that could provide us with a clearer idea about the tsunami debris' location, amount, and impact.
