Good Fire Day: The Role of Fire in Ecosystem Health & Climate Resilience
|
The Green Gulch Zen Center, Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Central Coast Rx Fire Council, and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy invite you to participate in an event addressing the beneficial role fire plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems and creating ecosystems resilient to a changing climate. Come and learn about firemanagement practices in our area, and see a controlled fire demonstration at Green Gulch Organic Farm! During the day we will learn about fire history and how fire functions in our ecosystems. There will be knowledgeable speakers in the morning from around the Bay Area. Lunch time will provide an opportunity to meet people and discuss topics of concern. In afternoon there will be an educational demonstration of a controlled burn (weather permitting). During this burn demonstration, fire experts will teach us about the different components of fire fuels, fire physics and heat transfer. Members from the Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department and the Northern California Wildland Firefighter Academy crew will also exhibit fire control practices as they meet the fire. Awareness of both the historical and current uses of fire, along with the beneficial impacts and the destructive potential of wildfire in this region is important. By understanding the diverse role of fire on the landscape, the public can support fire managers to implement proactive fire management policies and practices, which will allow us to better manage our natural resources and protect communities, both human and ecological. Outline for the Day 9:20 am—Noon: Presentations:
Noon—1:00 pm: Lunch Discussions. Please bring your own, as lunch will not be provided during the event. 1:00—3:00 PM: Fire Demonstration
