Brian O’Neill was a park and conservation leader renowned throughout our community and around the world. He was a friend, mentor, and inspiring force for so many. In August 2017, Brian’s global influence on urban parks and park management was recognized by World Urban Parks, which conferred its first-ever Parks Legacy Award to him. Board members of World Urban Parks—an international association for park agencies, organizations, and individuals championing healthy, livable, and sustainable cities—deeply valued Brian’s enduring vision and tireless work in cultivating community partnerships and relationships.

In particular, Brian had a special place in his heart for young people—the leaders of the next generation. He understood the critical role of young people in the long-term stewardship of parklands and the conservation of our cherished natural places, historic landmarks, and urban communities. Throughout his time at Golden Gate, Brian inspired many young people to pursue careers in public service and conservation.

The Brian O’Neill Youth Leaders Fund is used to support one "Brian O’Neill Youth Conservation Leader" at Golden Gate on an annual basis. The fund provides support for their training and development as a park and conservation leader. The fund is also be used to connect young people to the long-term stewardship of our parklands, ensuring that these special places thrive not only today, but for future generations.
